Battlestar Galactica Responsible for Bad Driving

A truck driver in the UK just couldn't help but watch the latest episodes of his favourite show while he was driving along the M6 motorway recently. (that's a highway to the yanks)

Apparently the truckie was driving all over the place and veering onto the hard shoulder and fellow motorists called the police who pulled over the truck driver and discovered that he was in fact indulging in the awesome Battlestar Galactica.

It appears that the Police officers and the Judge are not fans of the show and they are going to sentence him on October 3rd.

I would understand if he got a harsh sentence if he was watching "Coronation Street" or "Friends" but I don't think anyone should be charged for watching Battlestar while driving.

This proves once and for all that the legal system in the UK is in fact truly bias toward Science Fiction.

science fiction stuff.

Stargate Atlantis Mid Season Cliffhanger

Episode "First Contact"

Stargate Atlantis Wallpaper >>

The new Atlantis bad guys are here! but this episode also keeps the Wraith storyline running too.

Michael Shanks appears as Daniel Jackson and arrives at Atlantis with information he thinks will uncover a secret lab is located in the city. McKay reluctantly teams up with him to find it and when they do, all hell breaks loose!

The secret lab sends out a signal to another Ancient outpost on a distant planet, which just happens to be occupied by a deadly and so far un-named enemy.

These new bad guys arrive at Atlantis in a ship which passes directly through the city shield and they then burn their way down a tower into the lab where McKay and Jackson are working. Both are kidnapped by the new bad guys and transported back to the alien planet where they are forced to bring an Ancient Weapon back online.

Meanwhile Keller, Woolsey, Teyla and Ronon are on the Daedalus and have rendezvoused with a Wraith delegation led by Todd. They hope to prove they can create a serum which will benefit the Wraith and Humans alike.

The truce is shattered when 2 of Todd's Wraith Cruisers are destroyed by the Ancient weapon the moment they enter Hyperspace. Todd thinks it is a trick and takes over the U.S.A.F. Daedalus after incapacitating the crew.

The Finale will leave you desperate for more as the action moves back to Atlantis where something is seriously wrong with the Stargate.

to be continued...

Awesome Episode.

Stargate Atlantis "Tracker"

Tracker was a good episode, It finally gave Ronon something to do other than stand around looking mean.

Stargate Atlantis Wallpaper >>

Uber-Cute Keller is kidnapped by another Runner in a village while Rodney and Ronon have to find her. Rodney came along just because he fancies her as we discovered at the end of "the Shrine".

Keller bonds with her captor who turns out to be just a big teddy bear and not the mean old Runner that he appears to be, he just needs Kellers help to cure a girl he somewhat adopted from a Wraith culling which he feels responsible for.

Action wise, this episode features some cool fights with the nasty (can-they-be-stopped) wraith hunters who charge through the forest looking for hand-gina grub in the form of the Runner.

The interesting thing about this episode is the interaction between Ronon and McKay. They are completely different characters and we see that McKay feels threatened by Ronon when it come to who fancies Keller.

The final ("may the best man win") scene left me wondering if Ronon was maybe just winding him up perhaps? I liked it because poor McKay seems as though he has absolutely no chance in winner over Keller when he is up against the macho, handsome Ronon.

The episode did not slide into a Stargate 90210 thank god and I reckon it was a Good episode, not great but good.

USS Defiant : Sheer Awesomeness !

The most kick-arse/ass Star Ship ever?

It has to be the Awesome Federation Starship, USS Defiant NX-74205.

Since its first appearance in the Star Trek : Deep Space Nine episode "the search pt 1" the USS Defiant has been by far the coolest, sexiest, chick-magnet of a ship ever created for Science Fiction.

The moment when it opened fire for the first time on 3 Jem'Hadar warships and ripped one of them apart instantly has become a classic action scene in Trek history and if you are one of those people who never watched Deep Space Nine, you don't know what you are missing!

Pulse Phaser Cannons, Quantum Torpedoes, Photon Torpedoes, Ablative Armour and a Cloaking device make this little ship the coolest thing ever to grace our TV screens, I have yet to see something look or act as cool as the awesome USS Defiant.

sciencefictionstuff

Nicole De Boer

I first saw Nicole De Boer in the unbelievably brilliant and dripping with awesomeness Canadian movie "Cube".

She was great in that film, "its astro-nom-ical!!!" along with the superb David Hewlett. What surprised me though is how well she sticks in the mind from Deep Space Nine. She was only there for the final season as Dax and yet she seemed to have left a mark on many Trek fans around the world.

Indeed De Boer appears to be one of those actors who has well and truly settled into the Science Fiction genre, with appearances in Stargate Atlantis, as well as Cube and Star Trek.

I do hope that people like Nicole De Boer do not see this recognition as a handicap, that once you have a recognised face in Sci Fi, that's where you belong for the rest of your career.

She has stated that two of her favourite shows are Star Trek TOS and TNG so hopefully she is happy to be part of the Sci Fi community, I know I am. Its the best genre of them all!

Star Trek : Generations. One of the Best!

I must be one of the only people who thinks that Star Trek : Generations was one of the greatest Star Trek movise of them all.

We all know the story of Star Trek : Generations, so I wont repeat it here, instead I will focus on the things that makes it my favourite.

Acting :

There are numerous standout performances in this movie, most notably from Patrick Stewart as Picard.

My favourite scenes in no particular order...

> When Picard finds out that his nephew and brother have been burned to death in a fire:
The moments with Troi in his quarters as he looks through his photo album and thinks about all the things his nephew will miss is brilliant and charged with emotion. The contrast between this and when he has to snap back into the role of captain as the Armagosa star explodes right outside his window is great.

> Bridge Scene:
The short scene where he shouts at Will on the bridge to "just do it!" is right out of the norm for Star Trek, especially TNG.

> Armagosa Star:
There is a great music build up as the viewscreen is filled with a magnified image of the Armagosa star, Worf explains that Data and Geordi are not on board and the tension builds with the music in such a way that I have never seen on any other Star Trek film, magnificent directing by David Carson for this one.
Soran and Picard in 10 Forward:

> 10 Forward:
Soran pleads with Picard to let him back aboard the research station to continue his work, "time is the fire in which we burn" says Malcolm McDowell as Soran, which is met with a terrified look from Picard, the subsequent looks from Guinan and Soran with the music is beautiful.

> Bird of Prey Decloaks:
Normally when a ship suddenly decloaks the usual dialogue is "raise shields" "yellow alert" etc. But given the ever increasing complex situation at this stage in the film and Picards emotional state he simply reponds with "what?"

> Swept up by the Energy Ribbon on Veridian III
The look on Sorans face and the silhouette of him reaching for the sky in desperation as the ribbon approaches, no one can tell me that this is not a classic moment in Trek history.

> Enterprise B caught in the Nexus:
"all engines full reverse!"

> The external shot of Scotty, Chekov and Harriman as they stand in the damaged section of the Enterprise B as it flies overhead is genius FX work by ILM.

> Picard with children in the Nexus. Picard always hated kids and here we see that his ultimate ideal is to have them after all, brilliant character development, better than any other Trek film.

Visual FX by ILM.

The Visual effects in this film are far superior to subsequent installments of Trek movies, with perhaps the exception of the ramming scene in Nemesis. This film was made in 1994 and yet shots such as when the Klingon torpedoes pass through the Enterprise shields and rip into the hull are beautifully crafted and intricate.

Other stand out FX.

> No doubt the Enterprise D crash scene takes the cake, amazing photography and high speed filming.

> Veridian III explodes, one of the best planetary explosions ever, it even has the athmosphere being ripped off and underground pressure explosions, intricate to say the least.

> Armagosa spherical blast wave, rips apart the station and the Enterprise warps away. Brilliant!

> The final shot, a Star Trek movie should always end with a shot like this, 3 federation Starships warp away for the last scene

Star Trek : Enterprise : Another Tragedy

I admit, when Star Trek: Enterprise first came out, I as an avid Star Trek fan, slated it. I hated the thought that the writers were messing around with Star Trek canon by introducing a whole new bunch of prequel events that we know damn well never happened.

I watched the Premiere, then switched off.

In the last few years however, due to the great Star Trek drought of the early 21st century, I decided to give it another go.

I feel ashamed of myself, since one of Star Treks ideals is to have an open mind. :-(

I am a classic example of one of those people who probably contributed to the shows downfall, yet here I am, a few years later wondering why? Star Trek : Enterprise is an absolutely fantastic show! yes it is completely different from previous shows (sequel shows) but in many ways it has a far more mature and adult theme running through it.

The NX-01 crew have a much harder time coming to grips with their new found human morality in space. Dangerous space. They discover that they do indeed need to be well armed in space, which is somewhat opposite to the classic Star Trek philosophy, they discover that the interfering Vulcans do in fact have merit in their approach to interstellar relations.

The show has such a great con flux of ideas based on something that Star Trek has overlooked throughout its many incarnations. Enterprise explores what it is to try and be idealistic, moral and peaceful in a consistently dangerous place, this draws many a parallel to the real world.

In addition to is philosophy, the crew of the NX-01 Enterprise break new ground with character interaction including numerous scenes where we get to see much more flesh than normal due to the fact that after many away missions, crew members much "manually" rub each others half naked bodies with decontamination "gel" coooooool!

One particular episode features a partly Naked Jolene Blalock for all you shallow minded doubters out there! Wooooooooooooo !

The show has great tie-in stories too, including a really clever one where they bring back the Borg due to a mishap in Star Trek : First Contact.

The FX are brilliant, the actors are great and the show was cancelled far too soon.

Long may it live on in Syndication and DVD so that others may get a 2nd chance to see what a great show in its own right, this was.

Star Trek XI - First Review !!!

Kevin Smith, the maker of Jay and Silent Bob has seen Star Trek XI.

No he did not steal an early cut of the film but was instead invited by Director J.J. Abrams invited him to view his latest work.

Lucky Son of a Bitch!

“It’s really strong,” said Smith. “[J.J. Abrams] was rejiggering the opening few scenes. It’s one of those things where you first heard about it and were like no they’re not going to redo ‘Star Trek’! And then you see the movie and you think, wow he did pull it off! He turned it into a viable renewed franchise.”

Who stood out among this new cast, I asked him. “Chris Pine is fantastic,” he gushed. “It is a star-making performance. From his first scene forward, this dude is not doing an impression of Shatner. He is doing young Kirk. He doesn’t have the slow delivery mannerisms of Shatner but it’s totally James T. Kirk, the bravado, the self-assuredness. It’s such a great performance. You can’t take your eyes off the guy. Anytime he’s not on the screen you’re waiting for him to get back. And the chick [Zoe Saldana] who plays Uhura is really great. They made Uhura really interesting.” (from MTV)

Battlestar Galactica wins Emmy Award for VFX

Battlestar Galactica wins Emmy Award for VFX:

And so it should! Sci Fi shows always get overlooked in many award ceremony's because they exist too far outside the norm, but at least Battlestar Galactica grabbed its second consecutive Emmy for special visual effects (VFX).

And how the hell could it not? with FX shots like these! >>

Stargate Atlantis Rachel Luttrell

Who Knew? Rachel Luttrell (Teyla) as a Wraith Queen! cool!

I hope we see more of this kind of stuff, Stargate Atlantis actress Rachel Luttrell did a great job of pulling off the uncomfortable role of a prosthetic clad Wraith Queen in the latest offering from Stargate Atlantis's 5th and Final season
(unless we make them bring it back a la Star Trek TOS)

I always thought that Teyla was an underused character, or maybe what the writers gave her just wasn't too interesting in my opinion. This is a nice and somewhat sinister change of direction and I hope that we can see Teyla acting the part of Wraith Queen Again before the season finishes.

They certainly seem to have left the door open for it.

Stargate Atlantis "the Queen"

Season 5 Episode 8

Stargate Atlantis Wallpaper >>

I liked it, although it reminded me of the Star Trek : The Next Generation episode : "The Face of the Enemy" where Troi must work undercover as a Romulan.

The team hook up again with everyones favourite Wraith "Todd" to discuss releasing a treatment into the Wraith species that will allow them to feed normally, instead of sucking the life out of humans.

Todd shows interest in this new medial advancement by Keller but needs to contact another Wraith ship to move things forward. Unfortunately Todd needs a Queen. Without one, his authority and influence within the Wraith means nothing, so Teyla is recruited to undergo a process with transforms her into a Queen.

A Space Battle, some murders and a double-crossing later, the Atlantis team have a new ally "sort of" in Todd, who has now gained more control within the Wraith, although maybe that was his plan all along.

Stargate Atlantis has so far managed to impress with the quality of its villains, lets hope these ones are no different.

A Story of Faith.

I just got a comment on my blog and decided to visit the authors page out of courtesy.

Peter Grant writes short stories and I am normally a bit more of a lazy Sci Fi fan and prefer to get my fix via TV and Movies, however I decided to pick at random, one of Peters short stories to read and I am truly wowed at how impressive such a short piece of writing can be.

An original story of faith with a twist, "what if your god asked you to stop believing?"

You can read Peter's story here it only takes a few minutes to read and I highly recommend it!

Stargate Atlantis Season 5 Episode 7 : Whispers

Spoilers:

Basically this episode is about a bunch of freaky mutants have been left in an abandoned lab in the forest by Michael and our intrepid Atlantis crew must investiagate and kick some butt to escape in one piece.

Stargate Atlantis Wallpaper >>

For a minute there I thought I was watching a completely different show. I starts with a bunch of hot chicks exploring an underground lab including the awesome Nicole De Boer and none of our regular heroes.

But of course, Sheppard turns up and takes charge and the awesome Paul McGillion joins him as the cloned Dr Beckett who has returned to Atlantis briefly only to be dragged off world for this episode.

This episode was reminiscent of one of those Japanese horror films, the bad guys had awesome prosthetics and in one shot you see one of them moving up the inside of a well in a really freaky sped up fashion.

We don't actually get to see Connor Trinneer in this episode as Michael but I think this is going to lead up to something more.

Great episode, it is definitely cliché but still entertaining for the fun and scariness of it.

Cant wait for the next one!

Stargate Atlantis Wallpaper >>

Caprica

Well I know I said I was craving more science fiction and with the end of Battlestar Galactica and Stargate Atlantis, things are getting desperate in the sci fi camp.

But what have we here? "televisions first family science fiction saga" is what they are describing it.

The prequel to Battlestar Galactica titled "Caprica".

Sounds interesting and I am sure the writers producers will do a great job but will it be the epic, awe inspiring show that is Battlestar Galactica? I think the answer is most likely, no.

Here is the promo.

They definitely look as though they are thinly keeping in the Sci fi vein, but I have to say my first thoughts were that it looked a little "soapy" although it looks like a good soap.

Maybe I am wrong and I am definitely going to watch it anyway, however I am a sucker for space battles and this one looks like it ain't got any. :-(
