Star Trek is what we should aspire to be...

I often boast about the ideological and philosophical merits of Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek and often it falls on deaf ears and I feel stupid, but take a look at this paragraph below, it says everything I always wanted to promote about 'trek' and from a much better writer than me,

"Nobody on the Star Trek fictional crew works for a living or gets paid. Not the fictional crewmembers or the aliens or the enemies. Nobody puts in a timesheet or picks up a paycheck in this visionary world. Everybody just seems to be doing what needs to be done, and they all live long and prosper – unless they are blown to bits in one of the mandatory battles. After all, it is an action film series.
Still, the idea of doing what you want to do and being supported in that pursuit seems like the way things should be. After all, the bees do not pay the flowers for the nectar, and the flowers do not pay the sun for the radiant energy. So, why should any of us have to do anything that we don't want to do just to earn a living – to earn our right to live? ...This is what happens on Star Trek and with every living creature on Earth – except humans. We chase after money in pursuit of happiness only to find ourselves stuck in a job we dislike at best. Then, we wonder why we feel so unfulfilled and when we will finally be satisfied. That will never happen if we don't get out of the "making a living" box and expand into making a difference in our lives and the lives of our fellow humans."

I couldn't have said it better myself and this is what the Star Trek 'haters' out there will never understand.

Nero's Revenge Motivation in Star Trek

I was thinking about the motivation behind the bad guy (Nero) in JJ Abrams awesome reboot of Star Trek

Some people have criticised the 'evil' motivation of Nero, but I think because many people familiar with TNG and post-TNG Star Trek already know the back story of the Romulans that it actually might make more sense to fans when you stop to think about it.

Romulans are considered by many as a metaphor for Communist China and in recent Star Trek stories (TNG) they come to rely more upon the Federation ( the western world )

The Romulans made a massive leap of faith by relying upon Spock and the Federation's more advanced technical knowledge to save their world. The Federation and the Vulcan Science Academy indeed do have the technology and the ability to save Romulus and all the other worlds threatened by this new type of energy hungry supernova and indeed they build the device and stop the supernova just after it happens to wipe out Romulus.
Anyone with a suspicious mind (a Romulan) may well indeed come to the conclusion that Spock and the Federation planned all along to let Romulus succumb to annihilation.

From this I can see why the antagonist 'Nero' would be so bitter and vengeful for his people relying upon their former enemy.

Bear in mind also that during the 25 years waiting, he may well have warned Romulus of the impending doom in 2387. This was never established either way.

An I right? or am I talking a pile of Targ Poo?

Ideas for a Star Trek Sequel

Well, now that I have seen the film 3 times and I am still absolutely stunned by it, I and many others have been thinking, what about the sequel!

First up, bad guy (s), who could it be??

I would loved to see a mean, aggressive and violent rebooted Klingon Empire appear in this film but there is a problem. They look human at this period in time. I do think that JJ and co respect the fact that the much underrated "Star Trek: Enterprise" is canon and that they established the fact that Klingons messed around with their DNA to make "Augments" and in doing so, inadvertently lost their forehead ridges (such a great way to explain an anomaly caused by low budgets in the 60's!)

So, I dont think we can have Klingons in the next movie, at least not close up!

So who then?

Andorians would be too comical for mainstream cinema goers to consider a "real" villain so personally I think it should be either a new "enemy" or

The CARDASSIANS!

A rebooted Cardassian would look awesome! Those big ridged necks, dark eyes and militaristic sense of expansion into Federation worlds, cool.

The new film already established that the Federation at least knows of them since Uhura orders a "Cardassian Sunrise" drink at the bar in Iowa.

Who do you think should be Star Trek's next Antagonist!???

Star Trek Sequel : Writers talk Alternate Timeline.

"One of the obstacles that we found ourselves butting up against [when we took on the job] was this idea that we already knew the fate of the characters," writer/producer Alex Kurtzman told us of the newly established parallel "Trek" dimension, forever altered by the reckless actions of time-travelling villain Nero (Eric Bana).

"If you're going to bring a whole new iteration of 'Trek' to life, you could never put them in any real danger — because you already know how they either died or lived. So, we felt like, all right, we have to find a way to make the future unpredictable, so whenever they're in these difficult, treacherous situations there truly is the risk of death."

Imperial Klingon Empire Representatives Give Star Trek Film a Positive Review.

In a video in the Klingon language posted on YouTube, generals Karloth and Sol'rac of the Imperial Klingon Expeditionary Forces laud the movie's special effects and recommend it to "Klingons everywhere as well as Earthlings".

he generals are played by retired shoemaker Stu Lucas, 64, from Weston-super-Mare, and ex-soldier Keith Blatt, 47, from Luton, who appear as professional Klingons at fan conferences around the world. And the good news for non-Klingon speaking fans is that their review comes with English subtitles.

Star Trek : The Verdict? : Movie Review.

Well, I took the afternoon of work so I could go and see the film I have been waiting years to see.

Some Spoilers Ahead!

I went to a 2pm afternoon showing to avoid the schoolkids and thank god it paid off. Not a morsel of popcorn was thrown, not a word was uttered during the film from the 7 or so people in the very empty cinema.

The only thing seen and heard in the cinema was a variety of incredible sound effects and visuals, including the incredible sound of a fleet of slightly redesigned Federation starships zipping into warp speed, the amazing dialogue from our beloved reincarnated characters and the unbelievable (make that very believable) sights and sounds of a rebooted Gene Roddenberry universe.

This movie quite rightly is dedicated to the memory of Gene Roddenberry and Majel Barrett Roddenberry and in a single sentence. This film is an absolute triumph.

Before the immortal name "Star Trek" even appears on screen I had tears welling in my eyes from the incredible opening sequence, which alone had more emotion, action and epic-ness (is that a word?) in it that many other movies have in their entire duration.

Abrams has nailed the job of bringing the Star Trek Universe back to the big screen. I am amazed at how well done the casting is. This movie really is about Spock, Kirk, Bones and even Scotty at the top of the list and I have to say, all of them are cast perfectly.

John Cho does a very good job of Sulu and I have to admit, Uhura is not only wonderfully portrayed by Zoe Saldana but she is very easy on the eyes too. Anton Yelchin does a good job of Chekov but the accent does come across a little 'forced' but funny.

Eric Bana does a good job of the villain and like I have always said, a villain is only as good (or bad) as his motive and Nero's motive is simply about getting revenge for the destruction of his homeworld by an action on behalf of Ambassador Spock and the Federation.

Often in Star Trek the Next Generation's era we had a great deal of techno-babble whereas the original Kirk and co films did not. Surprisingly, this film did not attempt to dumb down any of the technological wizardry that Star Trek is well known for and there was quite a few bits in the film that could easily have gone over the heads of many people in the audience but still, they pull it off. Red Matter, Singularities, Beaming at Warp, its all in here and its awesome!

I would not say that this film is perfect, but its bloody close to it.

A+++++

I cannot wait to get my arse back down the cinema to see it again!

Update: Well I have seen it again and on reflection I still love it! I find it hard to flaw this film with the exception of some very convenient polt devices but hey, I put that down to destiny. This crew were meant to be together so there....

If I could change one thing it would be this: The Visual FX by ILM are so incredible, they deserve a little more screen time and what I mean by that is I just wish that they lingered a little longer on some shots, for example, when we see the USS Kelvin return fire on the Romulan mining ship, the shots are so awesome and explosive, that they should have lasted just a second or two longer for the viewer to absorb the action properly.

Same with when the USS Enterprise arrives at the end to take out the Romulan torpedoes, we see an amazing volley of Phaser blasts for about 2 seconds, then bam! it cuts away before we get to properly admire the beautiful curves of this heavy cruiser as it comes to the rescue.

"JJ, amazing job, but when you do the sequel, just add another 5 minutes to the overall film by lingering on those ILM FX shots... trust me. "

2009 looks like a Year of Sci Fi : District 9!

I just watched the trailer for "District 9",

It looks absolutely amazing. For a minute there I honestly thought this was a trailer for some kind of African documentary on race relations until wham!

.... well you will know when you see it.

I never even knew that new Zealand's own Peter Jackson was making another movie, or at least producing it. I guess that's what happens though when a made psycho trekkie like me has been thinking about nothing but the upcoming Star Trek movie for the last few years!

With the release of Star Trek, Terminator Salvation and now this, 2009 looks like it is going to be an awesome year for the Sci Fi genre,

please sir, can I have some more?

Best and worst of Star Trek

all according to the San Fransisco Chronicle!

Best "Trek" movie villain

Khan (Ricardo Montalban, "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan")
Images
Best smackdown: "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home" with Leon...Best villain: Ricardo Montalban's Khan.

Best "Trek" movie villain? How about the best movie villain ever? Khan was strong, sexy and sympathetic, but when it came time to shove a giant mutant space maggot into Chekov's ear, he was ready to throw down. Give him credit for keeping his crew alive - and their hair looking fantastic - for years on an abandoned planet that appeared to have nothing but sand as a resource. In an industry filled with synthetic bad guys, Khan was a rich Corinthian villain.

Honorable mention: General Chang (Christopher Plummer, "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country")
Worst "Trek" movie villain

Ad'har Ru'afo (F. Murray Abraham, "Star Trek IX: Insurrection")

Abraham is a fine villain for a Mozart biopic, but he's just not cut out for world domination. If the choice of the spindly Abraham as the film's main bad guy wasn't enough, the screenwriters gave his character a plastic surgery addiction that made him seem more pitiful than fearsome.

Honorable mention: Sybok (Laurence Luckinbill, "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier")
Most random "Trek" cameo

Christian Slater ("Star Trek VI")

Slater is a big "Star Trek" fan, and his mother was in charge of casting for the movie. So he shows up - for about six seconds - as the spaceship Excelsior night duty officer. His mission: to wake up Capt. Sulu. They don't have alarm clocks in the 23rd century?

Honorable mention: Kirstie Alley ("Star Trek II"); Kim Cattrall ("Star Trek VI")
Best "Trek" smackdown

Spock ("Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home")

"Star Trek IV" was a little too whale-heavy for some hard-core Trek fans, but we thought the Leonard Nimoy-directed movie was a lot of fun - especially the time travel plot that brought the crew to modern-day San Francisco. The most cathartic moment was on a Muni bus crossing the Golden Gate Bridge, where Nimoy's Spock puts a Vulcan sleeper hold on a punk playing his music too loud. The ovation from his fellow passengers said it all.

  • The USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-D) was a Galaxy-class starship commissioned in 2363, the fifth Federation Starfleet ship to bear the name Enterprise. She was called the Flagship of the Federation. The Enterprise-D was destroyed in 2371.
  • Height: 137.5M : Width: 467.0M : Length: 642.5M
  • The Enterprise-D carried 12 phaser arrays, 3 torpedo launchers, a supply of 250 photon torpedoes, and a high-capacity shield grid which could operate on multiple frequencies.
  • With a total of 42 decks, the USS Enterprise D was twice the length and had eight times the interior space of the Constitution-class ships of over a century earlier; she carried a combined crew and passenger load of 1013.
  • The Enterprise was built at Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards orbiting Mars in the Sol system. Construction was supervised by Commander Orfil Quinteros. Dr. Leah Brahms was responsible for much of the Enterprise's warp propulsion system design.
  • The ship's nacelle tube was the site of a multiple murder-suicide while she was still under construction at Utopia Planitia. A member of the construction team, Walter Pierce, became jealous of a former lover's new relationship. He killed the two officers, Marla Finn and William Hodges, then disposed of their bodies in the plasma stream. Pierce committed suicide in the same manner, leaving a telepathic imprint in a bulkhead that was not discovered until 2370.
  • Final systems completion and shakedown was conducted at Earth Station McKinley. Captain Jean-Luc Picard took command of the ship on stardate 41153.7 at the order of Rear Admiral Norah Satie.

Star Trek : It's been a long time coming

In just over a week the movie that I have been waiting for all of my adult life will finally arrive in my local Auckland cinemas. Although I love many of the Star Trek films, this one has so much riding on it.

The one thing that I wished Star Trek films had was an air of "Star Wars" in it. This may be considered blasphemy even among moderate Star Trek fans but one of the things that frustrated me about Trek was although they would often 'talk' about the federation and Starfleet, we never actually got to see much of the ships. 'First Contact' had a very good space battle with an armada of Starfleet ships pounding away at a Borg Cube (cool!) but what about the others? Insurrection was so so and Nemesis teased us with a graphic of other Starfleet ships on screen but we never got to see them!

Star Trek is amazing, but it always seemed to lack a little of the Epic scale that Star Wars succeeded in so hopefully this new film with finally fix this.

I have always wanted Star Trek to succeed in the mainstream for people who generally hate the genre and hopefully this will be the one that does it!

Long live Trek!
