New USS Kelvin 1920 x 1080 Wallpaper

The USS Kelvin (NCC-0514) was a 23rd century Federation starship of an unspecified class that was in service during the 2230s. In 2233, the Kelvin was under the command of Captain Richard Robau; his first officer was Lieutenant George Kirk. Kirk's wife, Winona, was also aboard the ship at that time while she was pregnant with their son, James T. Kirk.

The Kelvin had a single ventral warp nacelle housing the ship's warp drive engine. Its shipboard weaponry included phaser cannons which could fire bolts of highly concentrated energy and phaser emitters which fired less powerful beams. The shuttlebay was located in the aft section of the upper pylon.

On stardate 2233.04, the Kelvin was on a mission 75,000 kilometers from the Federation-Klingon border when it encountered a black hole created in 2387 by the detonation of a red matter device, subsequently creating an alternate reality. Initially the Kelvin believed that this phenomenon was of Klingon origin, although that theory was later dismissed.

The time of the encounter also marked the birth of George Kirk's son, to whom his wife Winona was on the verge of giving birth.

As the Kelvin was observing the black hole, an unidentified vessel, the Narada, a 24th century Romulan mining vessel commanded by Captain Nero, emerged from the future. When the Narada discovered the Kelvin, it quickly charged its weapons, and the Kelvin went to red alert and began fighting off torpedoes launched from the Romulan vessel. The first hit took out the warp drive and reduced main power to 38%. The second torpedo disabled Kelvin's atmospheric stabilization and collapsed its shields. The Kelvin was easily overcome, but the attack was halted by Nero's first officer Ayel, who requested that Captain Robau come aboard his vessel to discuss terms of a cease fire. Robau obliged the request and transferred to the Narada via shuttlecraft, leaving George Kirk in command. Robau's final orders to Kirk were to evacuate the ship using all available shuttlecraft, and to set the Kelvin on a collision course with the Narada, using the autopilot.

10 Geek Things I Love about Star Trek 2009

We have all heard the reviews and we now know that JJ Abrams Star Trek has become an instant classic and a superb reboot, but beyond the acting, the story and a the characters lies Props, VFX, Styles and set pieces. These are other things that Sci Fi fans love! yes I am talking about the eye candy, or what some call.... Sci Fi Porn!

01: New Warp Effect:
Over the previous films and tv shows, Federation starship always zipped into warp using a variety of Visual effects, most notably the 'warp stretch' effect. In this film, the guys and gals at ILM and the sound guys done an amazing job of simplifying the new warp effect by simply 'snapping' the ships into warp like a shotgun, awesome! Like one commenter said on a forum 'I like the new effect, its quick and clean, It actually feels like the enterprise just did 0 to >299,792,458m/s in 0.002 seconds' Captain Rosh-Mwrowl USS Gorkon NCC-40512-C The image is actually of the ship once in Warp, but its the closest I could find :-P

02: Sound Effects:
Those 1960's sound effects are back! As soon as we see the USS Kelvin, we get to hear a plethora of cool little effects which sound just like the 1960's Star Trek sonar beeps, Communicators and of course the classic transporter beam sound effect!!

03: Miniskirts:
Ok, well I guess this may not be Sci Fi Porn, but I am including it anyway. We all know that the 1960's were....well the 1960's and miniskirts were all in fashion. Minus a small amount of miniskirts on female crew members at the start of Star Trek: The Next Generation in the late 1980's we have not seen them since, miniskirts are back!

04: We Can See The Saucer Section!
Finally, after many many years, outside of the bridge of the USS Kelvin and the USS Enterprise we get to see the saucer section from the bridge viewscreen! ....Oh, there it is!

05: Old School Shuttlecraft
No doubt about it I reckon, those shuttle craft from the USS Kelvin and even the USS Enterprise were deliberately made to look old school. The ones from the USS Kelvin in particular looked decidedly 'retro'.

06: Weapons
What about those phasers on the USS Kelvin! I reckon this was inspired by later Star Trek shows such as TNG and Voyager where they had the red directed unbroken beam effect. The other weapons on cannon mounts which fire smaller blasts of broken energy are a first for Star Trek since normally as we all know, Starfleet ships have 2 types of weapons, Torpedo's and Phasers. I'm not sure what those other ones are, but they still look amazing! The New USS Enterprise had the classic broken phaser effect from the original show and Movies, magic!

07: Wreckage
This is something that was remedied part way through TNG but in Star Trek all to often we would see a ship explode and there would be no wreckage. Finally, WRECKAGE! and an absolute shitload of it too in orbit of Vulcan as the Enterprise must navigate its way through it... brilliant!

08: Transporter Effect
Although the Cardassian transporter effect in Deep Space Nine was much more 3D than previous versions, this new Starfleet effect has to be the most 3 Dimensional visual to date and comes across really well and the delay when Spock's party are being beamed up from a crumbling Vulcan is painful!

09: Hand Phasers
The new Stun / Kill setting on the hand phasers ( which are also very retro ) is great! We see the emitter cylinder end rotate to the front for Stun (Blue) and the deadly (Red) snap round for kill.

10: Music
Michael Giacchino Score for this film is nothing short of perfect. 'Enterprising Young Men' is the name of a track which is played at various points in the film but most notably when the Nerada is crippled after being rammed by the USS Kelvin and we see an amazing vista of sun, crippled ship, wreckage and the silhouettes of a mini armada of shuttles flying to safety.
When this track plays during the end of this opening sequence, I feel shivers down my spine!

What do you think? any more to add?

Star Trek Vs Star Wars

Ok, I think this finally proves it. In any battle between a Federation starship such as the USS Enterprise - D and a Star Wars Imperial Empire Star Destroyer, the Starfleet ship would win every time!

Guided weapons, shields and a ship with higher maneuverability would win at the end of the day, unfortunately in this most excellent youtube video below, the empire has a little surprise in store for our gallant Federation heroes. Enjoy!

Kids who love Sci Fi, give me hope for the future!

I was sitting in my office the other day dealing with a job for a teenager ( no names to protect the innocent ) and she remarked upon my collection of Battlestar Galactica posters which proudly adorn my office walls (see poster link to the left), we talked for a moment about it and then she spotted my Star Trek 2009 poster on another wall and should "cool!, Star Trek too!"

I was so chuffed and it was incredibly refreshing to see that there is still hope out there for us.

I kinda figured that Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica and to be honest, Sci Fi in general had simply not been an appealing genre to today's youth. ( I am only 30 though ) and that most of them would only be interested in whatever fad or trend which happened to be passing by at the time. Seeing such an interested reaction to sci fi from a kid made me think that maybe, just maybe there are a whole generation out there who may actually have some intelligence and creativity within them after all.

Cynicism be gone!

'Star Trek' promo wins Golden Trailer

Excalibur Class Federation Starship

The Star Trek Online MMORPG game have unveiled a type of Federation starship that will be seen a lot in the game: the Excalibur Class starship, a descended from the Constitution Class U.S.S. Enterprise NCC 1701 commanded by Captain James T. Kirk in the 23rd Century. Here is the info :

Cruiser; Commissioned 2391

Updating the iconic profile of the Constitution class, the Excalibur is the first of a group of new, state-of-the-art cruisers intended to fill a variety of roles for Starfleet.

Designed with the modular construction favored by the Starfleet Corps of Engineers, the Excalibur can tackle almost any task. Its expanded cargo capacity and advanced warp core make it an ideal solo exploration vessel, but it also performs well as a support ship during fleet actions.

During times of peace, the Excalibur class is well-suited for cargo or transport missions. Its massive holds make it invaluable to Starfleet, which uses the Excalibur class extensively to resupply planets, space stations and other starships. It has enough power to run industrial replicators non-stop, and is often the ship of choice for missions of mercy or rapid evacuations. Crews on Excalibur-class ships can convert cargo bays to temporary housing in a matter of hours, enabling the Excalibur to carry as many as 1,100 passengers in an emergency.

In combat, the Excalibur's Class VIII warp core is large enough to allow it to transfer power to damaged ships or extend its shields to protect an ally without impacting its own defenses or systems. Engineers on an Excalibur-class starship can reroute that power to boost its tractor beams, allowing it to grapple enemy ships that could easily break away from lesser vessels. It has enough crew to get damaged systems back online quickly, and can even transport repair crews to allied ships. And the Excalibur class's reinforced hull allows it to stay in a fight, even when faced with a coordinated enemy assault.

While the Excalibur is designed to be Starfleet's workhorse, other ships will outperform the Excalibur in some roles. The Excalibur is not able to equip the advanced sensors or laboratory modules of a science vessel, and it lacks the heavy firepower of escort or heavy combat starships. However, the Excalibur's versatility allows it to perform well in tough situations that specialized ships may not be prepared to handle.

Advanced technology standard to the Excalibur class include an improved electro-plasma distribution network able to handle greater amounts of energy and a new dilithium chamber configuration that keeps the crystals stable at high warp for longer periods of time.

The Excalibur class is often chosen by Starfleet captains who want a fast, powerful ship, but not necessarily a starship designed primarily for combat.

"We can send her anywhere and she can do anything," said Graarvin Narl, primary designer of the Excalibur class. "The Excalibur will carry Starfleet into the 25th century, and she'll do it with style."
